Appearance
Much to his dismay, one of Edward’s most defining characteristics has always been his height. He is not very tall though he has grown, thank-you-very-much. At this point in time, he is possibly 5’5” or as tall as Winry, whichever is, ahem, taller… Ed’s hair is long and blond, and he keeps it in a braid down his back or tied into a ponytail. His eyes are gold in color, and he has a rather expressive face. Two of Edward’s limbs are false. His right arm and left leg are mechanical prosthetics known as automail. As for fashion, Ed has an affinity for the colors black, red, and white. He is generally seen wearing a pair of white gloves and his trademark long, red coat with a flamel crest on the back.

Personality
Edward is like the quintessential tootsie-pop, and a bit of a prickly one at that. At first glance, he comes across as abrasive, rude, and self-serving. And he is, more or less, all of those things. However, these descriptors are largely symptomatic of his underlying motivation to restore his younger brother, Alphonse, to his original body. Ed will do anything, within certain moral boundaries, to achieve this goal and is single minded in his determination. If he has questions, he wants them addressed now. He has little patience for those wasting his time or holding him back.

Though it may not always be apparent, his is compassionate. “Alchemists live for the sake of the people,” is the creed of the State Alchemists and is something he takes very seriously. It is because of this that residents in the eastern part of the country took up calling him The People’s Alchemist. Ed has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and understanding. He easily loses track of time researching in libraries. And while growing up quickly has left him a little jaded, he still retains some of his naïveté and youthful antics.

Edward is also a dork. He spazzes when he is confronted with his feelings for his childhood friend and mechanic, Winry; he teases his brother and often finds himself one-upped; he will work hard to impress, only to have it backfire. His special brand of badass aesthetics (i.e. gargoyles, skull, and fangs) is often left unappreciated.

Abilities/Strengths
Edward is considered a genius, an alchemy prodigy. He needs only to clap his hands to perform a transmutation rather than relying on inscribed arrays like most other alchemists. In addition, he is an experienced fighter. His weapon of choice is the blade he transmutes from the cover plate of his automail arm. Edward is quick to learn and will not be caught making the same mistake twice. Alphonse is a big source of strength for Ed and helps to keep him grounded. The temperament of one brother compliments and bolsters that of the other; Ed and Al are at their best when they are together. As such, they can be both their greatest strength and greatest weakness.

Weaknesses
While he is undoubtedly smart, Ed is only intermittently a good tactician and would prefer to all fight the battles by himself. There are times when his ideas cause him and his brother more trouble than it's often worth, though they always seem to find a way to pull through. He is also known to have a temper and often overreacts because of it. A couple of people have even told Edward that his “resolve not to kill” was naïve and would get him killed. Whether or not his resolve is truly a weakness is up for individual interpretation for it could also be counted as a strength.

Notable Possessions
Edward carries with him a silver pocket watch that identifies him as a State Alchemist and his alchemy journal that is coded as a travelogue. While in Briggs, Winry gave him her earrings for safekeeping. They are still in his pocket.
